I am a big chocolate lover. I think it’s important to eat a healthy diet but at the same time to celebrate the delicious foods we enjoy and I believe that chocolate is good for you!

Cacao is high in magnesium which is essential for stress and helps us to relax and it’s also high in antioxidants which protect us from disease. Unfortunately, most chocolate treats are high in sugar, which actually depletes the body of magnesium as well as causing weight gain and health issues if we eat too much. If you consume cacao without the refined sugar then you can definitely view chocolate as a healthfood!

This hot chocolate is so delicious – and because it uses only a small amount of sweetener, combined with healthy fats and protein it doesn’t give too much of a sugar rush, but has all the taste!

The sunflower seeds or cashews provide protein, healthy fats and a nice dose of vitamin E which is an important antioxidant in the body and is essential for cell membranes, brain cells and cholesterol.

Ingredients:

2 tbsp cashews or sunflower seeds if you are nut free.

20g 100% cacao chocolate (I used Willie’s cacao) I like mine strong! Use less if you prefer a less chocolatey version.

1-2 tsp date syrup / brown rice syrup is a less sugary option (less sweet is actually a better taste with this)

1 cup of hot coconut milk

1/2 tsp maca powder (optional but good for stress)

Method:

Add the cashews or sunflower seeds into a blender. Heat the coconut milk and add the chocolate to the pan, whisk to combine. Then pour the warmed milk into the blender and blend completely. Pour into a cup and add the date syrup.

Alternatively you could have this as a cold smoothie – in which case add a few ice cubes when you blend it up.
